The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a change in leadership as Professor Mahmood Yakubu officially handed over the reins of the commission to May Agbamuche, who will now serve as the Acting National Chairman. The transition took place during a meeting at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Dependable NG reports that the handover to May Agbamuche, the most senior National Commissioner in the electoral body, was announced by Professor Mahmood Yakubu himself on Tuesday during the ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners. The move is a procedural step to ensure the continuity of the commission’s operations following the end of Professor Yakubu’s tenure, pending the appointment of a substantive Chairman by the Presidency.

In his address, Professor Yakubu, whose tenure has just elapsed, publicly solicited the full cooperation and support of the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioners and directors for Agbamuche. He emphasized the importance of unity and institutional integrity to ensure that the electoral body continues to discharge its constitutional duties effectively during this transitional period. May Agbamuche’s assumption of the role as the Acting National Chairman is expected to be a temporary measure, concluding upon the official selection and swearing-in of a new, full-term Chairman to lead the nation’s electoral umpire. The focus now shifts to the Presidency and the National Assembly for the nomination and confirmation process that will usher in the next substantive head of the commission.
