The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly welcomed the Federal High Court ruling that restrained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from proceeding with its planned national convention. Wike hailed the judgment as a successful move to dismantle impunity within the party, though he lamented the state of the PDP.

Dependable NG reports that Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja delivered the judgment on Friday, barring the PDP from holding its 2025 National Convention until the party strictly complies with the statutory requirements of its constitution and the Electoral Act. The judge also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing the outcome of any convention conducted without due process and compliance with the party’s guidelines, following a suit filed by three aggrieved party members.

Reacting to the verdict while addressing concerned PDP stakeholders from 12 states and the FCT, Wike conveyed mixed emotions. He described the judicial victory against the party leadership’s plans as one of the happiest days of his life but expressed sadness over the deep internal disarray plaguing the party.

“We are happy that we have fought impunity while on another part we are not happy with what is going on in the party,” Wike stated. “It’s unfortunate that the so-called purported national convention cannot hold, it has never been bad like this in the Peoples Democratic Party.” The former Rivers State governor added that quality leadership is paramount, and when certain party leaders become arrogant and fail to recognize the sacrifices made by dedicated stakeholders, reactions against their actions are inevitable. He concluded by urging the stakeholders present not to relent in their collective efforts to stand by the truth and ensure adherence to party rules.
