The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has publicly accused opposition political parties of deliberately orchestrating and fueling the claims of “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.

Dependable NG reports that Wike made this serious allegation on Monday during an interview on the Channels Television programme, Politics Today. He suggested that the opposition is manipulating the sensitive security situation for political gain, citing a historical precedent.

“In 2015, under Jonathan, people capitalised on these kinds of things to take over power. It’s very obvious that the opposition is fueling this Christian genocide in Nigeria,” Wike stated. The Minister claimed that the current political landscape, marked by the perceived collapse of the opposition’s ability to mount an effective electoral challenge to the incumbent President, is driving them to use divisive tactics.

Wike argued that having realized that no party is truly prepared to challenge the President’s political dominance, the opposition feels compelled to “do something,” and has therefore resorted to generating issues that will divide the country along religious lines. He asserted that the opposition sees the propagation of genocide claims as a strategy to unsettle the government and erode public trust.

The Minister, who currently serves in the administration, expressed strong feelings about the accusation itself. He said it is a painful indictment that a government he is part of would be alleged to be supporting genocide and the killing of Christians. “It is an indictment that a government I am serving, [that] anybody will allege that that government is supporting genocide, killing of Christians, and I am still in that government,” he concluded.
