UNILAG Post-UTME Malpractice Allegations Debunked, University

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has addressed the recent uproar surrounding its 2025/2026 Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (Post-UTME) screening, firmly refuting claims that technical glitches were responsible for notifications of examination malpractice sent to some candidates. In a statement signed by the Head of its Communication Unit, Adejoke R. Alaga-Ibraheem, the university clarified that the flagged cases were not the result of a system error, but rather were the outcome of “clear violations of examination rules.” According to UNILAG, these violations were detected through “robust monitoring mechanisms,” including secure video surveillance, which was deployed to ensure the integrity of the fully online screening process. The university, which saw 20,464 candidates participate in the exercise, acknowledged the circulation of reports on social media platforms questioning the fairness of the process. However, it maintained its stance, noting that while it would not release raw video footage of the incidents due to data protection standards, it might publish anonymized screenshots to illustrate the nature of the violations UNILAG urged candidates and their parents to trust only the university’s official communication channels and to disregard unofficial sources of information. This clarification comes after a number of candidates who were flagged for malpractice took to social media to allege they were unfairly penalized due to technical faults.
