UN Condemns Borno Massacre, Calls for Justice After 63 Lives Lost

The United Nations has issued a strong condemnation following the tragic killing of 63 individuals in Borno State, a grim event reportedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram terrorists. The attack, which left dozens of families bereaved, has prompted the international body to demand an immediate investigation and swift justice for the perpetrators.
The violence unfolded in Daral-Jamal, a community located along the Bama-Banki Road within the Sambisa Forest. In a brutal assault, suspected non-state armed groups killed 58 civilians and five soldiers. The attackers also wreaked havoc on the community, burning down over 20 homes, vehicles, and vital food supplies belonging to internally displaced persons who had recently been resettled there.
Mohamed Fall, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, expressed his profound shock and sorrow over the incident. In an official statement, he conveyed heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, the Borno State Government, and its people. Emphasizing the sanctity of civilian life, he declared, “Civilians should never be a target!”
Mr. Fall has urged Nigerian authorities to take decisive action, calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the “heinous attack.” He also called for the prompt and unconditional release of all individuals who were reportedly abducted during the assault.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the escalating violence and insecurity plaguing Borno State and its neighbors. The UN noted that this year alone, hundreds of civilians have been killed in Borno, with attacks targeting vulnerable communities, IDP camps, farmers, and traders using various deadly tactics, including improvised explosive devices and suicide bombings. Neighboring Adamawa and Yobe states have also been affected, with recent attacks hitting a rural health center, grain stores, and a market.
The UN reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to supporting conflict-affected populations and pledged to continue its efforts in assisting the Nigerian government to protect its citizens and uphold international humanitarian and human rights laws.
