TUC Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Federal Government's Proposed 5% Fuel Tax

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has voiced its outright rejection of the Federal Government’s planned 5% tax on petroleum products, branding the proposal as an “act of economic wickedness” against citizens already struggling with immense hardship. The union warned that the tax, if implemented, would trigger a nationwide strike.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its President General, Festus Osifo, and Secretary General, N. A. Toro, the TUC argued that Nigerians are still reeling from the fallout of the fuel subsidy removal, which has led to skyrocketing prices, high inflation, and a weakened naira. The union stated that the government cannot continue to subject its citizens to endless economic experiments. Instead of providing relief, jobs, and solutions, the government, it says, has chosen to further burden the people.

The TUC has demanded an immediate halt to what it calls an “anti-people’s plan.” It has issued a firm warning that it will mobilize workers and the masses for a “total nationwide resistance” if the government ignores this call. The union also directed all its state councils, affiliates, and other structures to remain vigilant and ready for decisive action should the government proceed with the new tax.

Furthermore, the TUC has called on other civil society organizations, professional bodies, student unions, and all patriotic Nigerians to stand in solidarity with the workers’ struggle. The union’s message is clear: Nigerians deserve economic justice, not endless punishment.
