Tragedy in Jigawa: Teenage Boy’s Body Recovered from Gabari Village Pond

A pall of sorrow has descended upon Gabari village in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa state following the tragic discovery of the body of 15-year-old Sunusi Abubakar in a local pond. The devastating incident has prompted a renewed call for vigilance regarding water safety across the community.

Dependable NG reports that the boy’s disappearance was first noticed after he went for a swim in the pond, known locally as ‘Mahayin gidan Toro,’ at approximately 5:00 PM on Tuesday. His father, Abubakar Musa Gabari, raised the alarm when his son failed to return home, triggering an immediate and frantic search operation involving local community members and security agencies.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) confirmed the recovery of the body on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. Spokesman of the Jigawa State NSCDC command, ASC. Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, issued a statement detailing the discovery, which occurred at about 9:00 AM inside the pond situated about 1.5 kilometers north of Gabari village. Prior to the discovery, search teams had located the deceased’s shoes and trousers abandoned near the water body on the evening of September 30, 2025.

Mr. Badruddeen confirmed that an examination of the deceased’s body revealed no trace of injury, ruling out foul play and suggesting a tragic drowning. Following the necessary procedures, the body was immediately handed over to his grieving parents. The burial was subsequently carried out in accordance with Islamic rites, bringing a somber close to the search.

In the wake of this sorrowful event, the NSCDC has issued a serious and heartfelt appeal to all parents, guardians, and community leaders. The security agency is strongly urging them to intensify efforts to educate children and youths on the dangers associated with swimming in open water bodies, emphasizing the importance of safe practices to avert any future recurrence of such avoidable tragedies within the state.
