The United States Embassy Warns Citizens of Potential Violence Ahead of #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja

The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security advisory to American citizens residing in or visiting Nigeria’s capital, cautioning them about a planned protest scheduled for Monday, October 20th, 2025.
Dependable NG reports that the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstration, which calls for the release of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, could lead to major disruptions and the potential for violence. The Embassy’s statement, released on Friday, specifically warned that the areas around Eagle Square and the Central Business District could experience roadblocks, heavy traffic, and clashes that might turn violent between police and protestors.
To ensure the safety of its citizens, the Embassy strongly advised all U.S. nationals to completely avoid the protest areas and to severely limit all movement throughout Abuja on Monday, October 20th. Furthermore, the security alert went beyond a mere travel caution, recommending that children in Abuja stay home from school and that domestic staff who commute from outside the city also remain at home on the day of the demonstration.
The Embassy’s advisory, while noting that the protest organizers have called for peaceful demonstrations, urged Americans to exercise increased caution, monitor local media for updates, keep a low profile, and review their personal security plans, including ensuring their cell phones are charged in case of emergency.
