Tension Grips Abia Community After Youth Dies During Police Interrogation

A resident of Ozuitem, identified as Mr. Akobundu Okorie Wisdom, collapsed and passed away while being questioned by officers at the Bende Police Division in Abia State. The young man, who was living in Bende town, had reportedly been called in for interrogation by the Police concerning an alleged offense.

Dependable NG reports that the deceased allegedly slumped during the questioning. A source within the police force maintains that the young man died while being transported to a hospital in Umuahia for medical attention. However, residents of the Bende community, especially those acquainted with the victim, strongly assert that he was fatally beaten while being interrogated in the police cell.

As word of the youth’s death circulated, a massive group of outraged residents descended upon the Bende Police Division. The crowd was visibly distressed, weeping and threatening to retaliate for the death.

In response, the Abia State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, arrived at the station with senior officers to address the furious gathering. “I want to assure you that justice will be done,” the Commissioner stated. “As I am talking to you, all the policemen that are involved in the interrogation have been put in the CID,” he confirmed.

Adding to the reaction, the Executive Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Uwabunkonye Bassey, conveyed his profound shock and sorrow over the loss of Mr. Akobundu Okorie Wisdom. He stated, “According to preliminary reports, the late Mr. Wisdom was said to have been accused and subsequently invited to the Bende Police Station for questioning. Sadly, according to the officers present, during the course of the interrogation, he reportedly slumped and, despite being rushed to a hospital in Umuahia, was confirmed dead by medical personnel.”
