Sunshine Stars Back Home in Akure for NNL Clash
The Sunshine Stars are making an eagerly awaited return to their traditional home turf, the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, for the commencement of their 2025–26 Nigeria National League (NNL) season. The return to their spiritual base ends a period of displacement that lasted since 2023, during which the stadium underwent necessary renovation work.
The completion of the refurbishment means the ‘Owena Waves’ can finally abandon their temporary homes and reconnect with their dedicated fan base in Akure. This move is expected to inject a significant boost of morale and local support as the team navigates the rigors of the second-tier Nigerian league.
Sunshine Stars had been forced to adopt alternative venues for their home fixtures during the renovation period, temporarily utilizing the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu-Ode and the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne during their previous Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign. While these venues provided a temporary playing field, nothing replaces the feeling and psychological advantage of playing on one’s own traditional ground.
The club’s grand homecoming is set for this Saturday, where they are scheduled to lock horns with Gateway United in their NNL match day two fixture. This clash is poised to be an emotionally charged encounter, marking the first competitive game back at the Ondo State Sports Complex and serving as an opportunity for the team to reaffirm their dominance in their traditional base. The support from the local fans, who have been deprived of top-level football at their stadium for an extended period, is anticipated to be electrifying.
