Sultan of Sokoto: ‘Christian Genocide’ Claims in Northern Nigeria are False and Divisive

The Sultan of Sokoto and Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, on Tuesday categorically denied claims of an llllongoing genocide against Christians in northern Nigeria, describing such allegations as unfounded and intended to sow disunity.

Dependable NG reports that the monarch addressed the controversial issue at a meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State. He stated that the narrative of a Christian genocide is false and merely aimed at stirring conflict among the faithful. From time immemorial, Christians and Muslims have lived as brothers in the North. These allegations are false and are merely aimed at sowing discord among the inseparable faithful, the Sultan asserted, emphasising the long history of peaceful coexistence in the region.

Alhaji Abubakar III used the occasion to commend the Nigerian Army for their sustained and tireless efforts in tackling the menace of banditry and insurgency across the northern part of the country. He reaffirmed the traditional rulers’ strong commitment and support for the military and the Federal Government in their continuous fight against insecurity. Without the military, we wouldn’t be here holding this meeting comfortably. Therefore, we must encourage them to do more, he said.

Furthermore, the Sultan raised a critical concern regarding the reckless use of social media, urging the Federal Government to take immediate steps to regulate its use. He revealed that he himself had been a victim of dangerous misinformation and fake news circulated on online platforms, warning that the unchecked spread of falsehoods poses a serious threat to national peace and stability.
