Reps Deputy Spokesman: Governance is Not Gossip, Defends Tunji-Ojo Amidst NYSC Certificate Row
The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has stepped forward to robustly defend the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, amidst the public controversy surrounding his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.
Dependable NG reports that while addressing journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, Agbese firmly dismissed the allegations as “politically motivated attempts” aimed solely at distracting the Minister from his critical official duties. He strongly argued that performance and delivery, not baseless rumours, should remain the primary measures of public service for any government official. Agbese highlighted that since Dr. Tunji-Ojo assumed office at the Ministry of Interior, he has introduced significant reforms. These successful initiatives include decisive measures taken to clear the massive passport backlogs, notable improvements in service delivery and operations within the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), and structural enhancements within the Correctional Service.
The lawmaker stated that these initiatives have led to improved efficiency, especially in areas of automation, staff welfare, and revenue generation across key agencies under the Ministry. He warned that allowing unverified allegations to dominate the political discourse risks severely undermining the substantial reform efforts currently underway. Agbese urged critics to allow due process to take its proper course regarding the NYSC certificate matter, rather than resorting to what he labelled as “trial by public opinion.” He stressed that if there are any genuine questions, the institutions of state should handle them, not “political jobbers or social media mobs.” Agbese concluded by asserting: “Governance is not about gossip; it’s about delivery. Every citizen can see the difference the Interior Ministry is making — faster services, cleaner processes, and greater accountability.”
