The Nigeria Police Force has moved swiftly to debunk widespread reports alleging that human rights activist Omoyele Sowore was re-arrested by security operatives shortly after he was granted bail in court on Friday. The activist had been detained for organising a protest demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

Dependable NG reports that the rumours, which had gained traction across media platforms, suggested that Sowore was apprehended within the courtroom premises on a new charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arraigned on Monday.

In a move to set the record straight and provide clarity on the situation, the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, categorically dismissed the re-arrest claims as entirely false. He pointed out the procedural impossibility of such an action, stating that a suspect arrested on a fresh charge cannot be taken directly to prison.

“Story that he was arrested on a fresh charge and whisked away to Kuje Prison to be arranged on Monday is procedurally incorrect. A person arrested on a fresh charge cannot be taken straight to prison. No prison will accept such a person without a remand warrant duly issued by a competent court,” the Force PRO was quoted as explaining.

Hundeyin further clarified that the activist’s transportation to the custodial centre was purely administrative and in direct compliance with the court’s directive. He stated that the measure was only to ensure that the court’s order was fulfilled pending the perfection of his bail conditions.

“He was taken to prison as instructed on the attached remand warrant pending when he meets his bail conditions, nothing more,” the Force PRO concluded, putting to rest the fears and speculations surrounding Sowore’s immediate post-bail status.
