Osun State Approves Osun Babes’ Participation in Nigeria Women Premier League
The Osun State Government has officially given its approval for the state’s female football team, Osun Babes, to compete in the Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) for the forthcoming 2025/2026 season.
Dependable NG reports that the announcement was made in Osogbo on Friday by Kehinde Johnson, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Football Matters. This decision aligns with the state government’s renewed and vigorous efforts to boost sports development and significantly increase the engagement of women in competitive football.
According to Johnson, the approval serves as tangible evidence of the current administration’s continued support for the growth of women’s sports across Osun State. He stated that the government’s commitment is aimed at fostering sports excellence and empowering female athletes to achieve success at both national and international competitions.
Johnson further elaborated that the move is an integral part of the state’s long-term strategic vision, designed to establish a solid platform for young female footballers to nurture their skills and proudly represent the state. He specifically acknowledged and commended Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke and Deputy Governor Prince Kola Adewusi for their consistent and unwavering dedication to sports initiatives within the state.
The Senior Special Assistant also gave recognition to the Commissioner for Sports for their vital role in ensuring that the state’s football programmes maintain an active and competitive edge. Expressing strong confidence in the team, Johnson anticipated that the Osun Babes would deliver an impressive performance in the upcoming season and bring pride to the state through their commitment and exceptional teamwork. Osun Babes, one of Nigeria’s well-known female football clubs, are expected to immediately kick off preparations for their 2025/2026 Nigeria Women Premier League campaign with the season commencing in December.
