Ogun State Commuters Applaud Abeokuta-Sango-Ota-Lagos Expressway Revamp
Motorists and commuters are celebrating the ongoing reconstruction of the Abeokuta-Ifo-Sango-Ota-Lagos expressway, praising the Ogun State government for the significant improvements to the once-deplorable road. The project, flagged off by Governor Dapo Abiodun, has brought a new sense of relief and optimism to thousands of road users.
The road construction, initiated in August with an 18-month completion target, is progressing at a commendable pace. Work is being carried out simultaneously at five key locations, including Olomore, Owode, and the Toll Gate axis. Sections that were previously in disrepair, such as those at Brewery, Obada, and Itori Junction, have been repaired and are now open to traffic, dramatically improving travel conditions.
Oba Abdul Fatai Akorede Akamo, the Olu of Itori, shared his gratitude, recalling the long-standing neglect of the road by previous administrations. “This road has been abandoned for so many years, and I thank God that Governor Dapo Abiodun took the bull by the horns and committed to doing the Lagos-Ota-Abeokuta road,” he said. The traditional ruler commended the governor for keeping his promise, noting the visible progress on what is a federal road. He also acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he described as a “pillar of support” for the governor.
Commuters echoed this sentiment. Opeyemi Akindele, a commercial transporter, highlighted the immediate benefits of the construction. He noted a significant reduction in accidents and a smoother flow of traffic. “The movement of vehicles along this axis is now very smooth compared to before. In the past, we used to have constant breakdowns of our vehicles because of the state of the road,” Akindele said. He, however, suggested the need for a dedicated trailer park to prevent articulated vehicles from causing obstructions.
Residents of the area also shared their commuter satisfaction. Ololade Anjolaoluwa of Papalanto expressed relief that the long-standing traffic issues were now a thing of the past, while Akande Michael called on the contractors to maintain their swift pace to ensure timely project completion. The consensus among residents and road users is one of overwhelming satisfaction and gratitude for the government’s intervention in rebuilding the critical Ogun State infrastructure.
