Nigerian Gospel Star Nathaniel Bassey Mourns Uma Ukpai, Calls Him ‘Man of Great Power’

Renowned Nigerian gospel artist, Nathaniel Bassey, has paid a deeply personal and emotional tribute to the late Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, describing the revered evangelist as a true spiritual father and a defining influence in his own Christian walk.
In a heartfelt post shared with his followers on Instagram, the ‘Imela’ crooner reflected on the profound effect of Ukpai’s ministry and lifestyle, especially his devotion to prayer and fasting, which the artist admitted deeply shaped his own spiritual practices.
Dependable NG reports that Bassey lamented the passing of the spiritual icon, writing: “Oh! Dr Uma! Sometimes you wish some people would never die. Just a few days ago, I led multitudes in an evening fast, something I learnt from you and even mentioned so. You called me son. What a privilege. A man who knows the ways of the spirit.”
The popular musician described Ukpai as “a man of great power, immense stature, and deep spiritual understanding,” emphasizing that the late preacher provided a living example of how sincere worship and praise could be leveraged as powerful tools for victory in spiritual warfare. According to Bassey, Ukpai’s ministry focused not just on miracles, but crucially on “unveiling the mysteries of faith and humility” in a genuine relationship with God.
Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who passed away on October 6 at the age of 80, was widely known as one of Nigeria’s foremost evangelists. His death, confirmed a week after his passing, has triggered an outpouring of tributes from leaders, gospel ministers, and believers across the entire country.
