My Music Doesn’t Belong in Church, Says Singer Johnny Drille

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Johnny Drille, has discussed his spiritual journey and the boundaries of his music, stating that while his faith is strong, he has never felt that his style of music fits entirely within the structure of church ministry.
Dependable NG reports that the Mavin Records artist opened up about his views during a recent episode of the CreativiTEA podcast. He acknowledged that he loves God and remains very involved in church activities, but said, “I never really felt my music was for church. Sometimes I get invited to perform in church, which is quite interesting.”
Johnny Drille addressed the criticism he sometimes receives from the Christian community when he performs in religious settings. He explained that although his songs are not strictly gospel, they focus on spreading positivity and meaningful values. “I’ve gotten some backlash from the Christian community whenever I perform in churches. But the truth is my music spreads positivity. It touches the issues the church tries to avoid,” he noted.
The singer, known for his heartfelt love songs, argued that the church often avoids conversations about human love, a subject he believes is crucial and spiritual. He humorously pointed out the absence of Christian love songs in Christian settings: “The church shies away from talking about love. You go to Christian weddings you hear Davido and Wizkid song. What if the church decides that we want to start doing their own Christian love songs.”
