Nigerian music producer and executive, Don Jazzy, has shared that the sudden dissolution of Mo’Hits Records in 2012, which he co-founded with D’banj, nearly convinced him to quit the music industry entirely and relocate abroad.
Dependable NG reports that in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Don Jazzy disclosed the severe personal and professional impact of the split, which stemmed from disagreements between the two co-founders. The music mogul stated that the experience was so devastating he contemplated ending his music career.
The ‘Dorobucci’ crooner credited his inner circle for encouraging him to persevere, a decision that led to the founding of his highly successful current venture. “When Mo’Hits ended, I thought that was it. I almost packed up to move abroad. But friends encouraged me to stay and start again, and Mavin Records was born,” Don Jazzy revealed. He added that the challenging experience made him stronger, asserting that since then, nothing has ever been able to break his spirit.
Following the Mo’Hits split, Don Jazzy went on to establish Mavin Records. The new label initially served as a home for many former Mo’Hits artists, including Wande Coal, Dr SID, and D’Prince, and quickly introduced a wave of new stars such as Tiwa Savage, Reekado Banks, Korode Bello, and Di’ja. The label’s current roster features some of the biggest names in Afrobeats, including Rema, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe, Crayon, and Magixx. The legacy of his resilience was further cemented in 2024 when Universal Music Group announced a majority investment in Mavin Global, accelerating its international expansion and securing its place as a global music powerhouse.
