Life-or-Death Alarm: Kanu Cries Out Over ‘Sudden Death’ Risk in DSS Custody, Blames ‘Falsified’ Medical Records

Dependable NG reports on a shocking distress call from the detention facility of the Department of State Services (DSS), where detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has raised a life-or-death alarm, citing a severe array of ailments he alleges are being dangerously neglected, putting him at imminent risk of “stroke, collapse, or sudden death.”
In a scathing “Letter of Complaint and Appeal” addressed to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Kanu detailed the “gravest threats” to his survival, centering on the debilitating combination of Tinnitus and sleep deprivation.
The Immediate Danger of ‘Chirping’ and Sleep Loss
Kanu described Tinnitus—a constant, internal “chirping” sound in his ears—as more than a nuisance. He stated: “The incessant chirping in my ears is more than a nuisance: It robs me of sleep, sometimes making rest completely impossible; It exacerbates my hypertension,” adding that the condition “magnifies chest pain, fainting risks, and psychological strain.”
He warned that the critical combination of sleep deprivation with his existing hypertension, organ strain, and potassium instability “places me in immediate danger of stroke, collapse, or sudden death.”
Kanu lamented that a DSS proposal to drain fluid from his inner ear was abandoned due to the risk of permanent hearing loss, and since then, “no serious effort has been made to treat this condition.” He strongly condemned the alleged neglect, stating it “shows a reckless disregard for the life-threatening impact of untreated conditions.”
Allegations of Falsified Records and Systemic Ailments
The IPOB leader’s complaint escalated with explosive accusations against the DSS-appointed doctor, Dr. Nasiru Mohammed, whom he accused of falsifying his medical test results.
“From the moment he assumed control, Dr. Nasiru Mohammed began falsifying my test results, recording normal potassium levels when in reality they were dangerously low,” the letter claimed. Kanu detailed a litany of continued symptoms under the doctor’s supposed care, including frequent nosebleeds, fainting episodes, severe light-headedness, unrelenting chest pains, and debilitating headaches. He pointedly noted that over 50 blood samples had been taken during his time in custody with “no improvement in my health” under the DSS management.
Beyond Tinnitus, the letter listed broader systemic health issues confirmed by his personal physician, Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, including:
Liver, pancreas, kidney, bladder, prostate, and white matter disease.
Sleep apnea.
Critically low potassium levels.
Intervention and Intimidation
The document reserved high praise for Emeritus Professor Martin Aghaji, a globally respected surgeon, whose “timely intervention” Kanu says “saved me from imminent collapse.”
Kanu’s personal physician, Dr. Cfine, was reportedly “barred from access and intimidated into silence” until Professor Aghaji’s involvement. Under Professor Aghaji’s ethical care, Kanu reported a modest rise in his potassium level and the cessation of nosebleeds and fainting.
However, Kanu alleged that instead of supporting Professor Aghaji, the DSS has subjected him to the same “pattern of intimidation” used against Dr. Cfine, thereby obstructing crucial, life-saving medical care.
The grave complaint comes just days after a Federal High Court in Abuja, while dismissing Kanu’s no-case submission, ordered the NMA President to constitute an independent team of medical experts to evaluate Kanu’s health status and determine the adequacy of the DSS medical facilities. Kanu’s direct appeal to the NMA, filed before this ruling, underscores the urgency and depth of his fears regarding his health while in state custody.
