The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has launched a fierce verbal attack on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), dismissing the remaining members of the opposition party as mere “undertakers waiting to bury a dying party.” The strong remarks were made by the Lagos State APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, on Saturday, following a fresh wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling party.

Dependable NG reports that Mr. Oladejo’s statement painted a grim picture of the opposition, accusing the PDP of being in a “chronic state of denial, delusion, and self-deception” for downplaying what he termed a “mass exodus” from its ranks. A reporter for Dependable NG noted the aggressive tone of the APC spokesman, who warned the PDP that claiming defections cannot weaken it was “laughable.”

According to the APC chieftain, the ongoing defections are not just routine political movements but the “inevitable outcome of years of deceit, lack of ideology, and betrayal” within the opposition party. He likened the PDP to a “house… built on quicksand,” asserting that it only took a “tremor to bring it down.”

Mr. Oladejo argued that the exodus proves that even long-standing loyalists of the PDP have completely lost faith in a party that has “refused to reform or present a credible alternative to Nigerians.” He added that those still with the party are “merely undertakers, staying behind to perform the final rites and dispose of what remains of a once-dominant but now lifeless political entity.”

The APC spokesperson further accused the PDP of relying on “propaganda and empty promises” during its 16-year rule and maintained that the party cannot reinvent itself as a credible opposition while it “remains mired in confusion and leadership crises.” He tied the defections directly to the rising confidence in the current administration, stating that the movement of key figures to the APC reflects an endorsement of President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’

Concluding his critique, Oladejo advised the opposition to perform an “honest post-mortem of its failures” and accept the harsh reality that its influence on Nigeria’s political landscape has “drastically faded.” He declared that the defections represent more than just political victories for the APC, but a “clear endorsement of our commitment to progress, stability, and people-centred leadership,” emphatically stating that “the era of deceitful opposition politics is over.”
