The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State has publicly voiced its disapproval regarding the recent selection of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki by the Northern PDP caucus as the unopposed choice for the position of National Chairman.

Dependable NG reports that the Jigawa State Chairman of the party, Honourable Babandi Ibrahim Gumel, disclosed this stance in a media interview on Saturday. He criticized the decision, asserting that it goes against the collective interests of the North-West stakeholders.

Gumel explained that during its meeting last Monday, the Northern PDP caucus had zoned the National Chairman position to the North-West and subsequently instructed stakeholders in that zone to put forward a suitable candidate. He stated, “Based on this directive, we agreed to hold our meeting on Thursday at about 8:00 pm under the chairmanship of the Zamfara State governor. To our dismay, on Wednesday, those who asked us to go and nominate from North-West went ahead and nominated the candidate of their choice.”

He further added that their influential leader, Dr. Sule Lamido, was not informed of the Northern caucus meeting until just one hour before it was scheduled to commence that night. Gumel also noted that none of the individuals who were ultimately nominated had purchased an expression of interest form to indicate their desire to become the party chairman.

He stressed that Dr. Sule Lamido had been suggested by key party chieftains at the national level and other national leaders as the ideal candidate capable of revitalizing the party. Gumel lamented, “We were denied the opportunity to carry out the task assigned to us, so we are now waiting to see if our resolution will be considered.”

The Chairman emphasized that their main priority is for the PDP to be headed by an individual who can successfully bring the party back to life and overcome its present challenges. He affirmed their commitment to the party’s longevity, saying, “We have been in the party for the last 26 years; therefore, we do not want anything that can destabilize the party.”
