Governor Mbah’s Defection to APC is ‘A Blessing to South East,’ Says Senator Shehu Sani

Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has strongly defended Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a strategic and positive development that will benefit the entire South East region.
Dependable NG reports that Senator Sani spoke to journalists following his attendance at the United Africa Development Initiative Summit. He asserted that Mbah’s decision should not be viewed as an act of betrayal, but rather as a bold, strategic step necessary to rescue the South East from political isolation and irrelevance within Nigeria’s federal power structure.
“Governor Mbah’s defection to the APC is a blessing to the South Eastern part of the country. It is a strategic decision that will factor the region into the mainstream political equation in Nigeria,” Senator Sani stated.
Politics is Strategy, Not Sentiment
The former Senator argued that public criticisms trailing the defection were unfair and driven by sentiment, not political reality. He questioned why members of the Labour Party (LP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) were upset with a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member joining the APC, noting that many of them had previously left the PDP themselves.
“Why should LP and ADC members be angry with a PDP member who joined the APC when many of them also left the PDP earlier? Politics is about alignment and strategy, not sentiment,” he maintained.
Senator Sani concluded that the governor’s defection had raised the region’s political chances rather than diminished them, describing the strategic alignment metaphorically: “Mbah’s defection is like taking the goods of the South East to a bigger market where the action is.” He urged political stakeholders in the region to rally around Governor Mbah, using his new platform to push for greater inclusion, development, and national representation.
