Governor Bago partners with ICAN to audit Niger State’s finances

In a landmark move toward greater transparency, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has announced a partnership with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to conduct a comprehensive audit of the state’s financial records. The collaboration aims to not only identify and correct past financial anomalies but also to recommend improvements to the state’s overall accounting system.

Governor Bago made the announcement while opening the 20th Northern Zonal Accountants’ Conference in Minna, which was themed “Accountability and National Re-orientation: Unlocking Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Potentials.” He emphasized that this partnership with ICAN would serve as a model for other states, demonstrating that transparency and fiscal discipline are essential for effective governance and unlocking economic potential.

The governor noted that the conference’s theme was particularly relevant to Nigeria’s current situation, highlighting the importance of accountability, rebuilding public trust, fostering national values, and stimulating economic growth. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening institutions that promote accountability for the benefit of all citizens. Governor Bago also encouraged the conference attendees to develop practical recommendations that could help all levels of government build stronger systems and inspire public confidence.

In response, ICAN President Mallam Haruna Nma Yahaya expressed his appreciation for the partnership and assured the governor that ICAN would maintain its independence throughout the audit process.
