Gov Otti Meets Tinubu Over Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday hosted Governor Alex Otti of Abia State at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. The high-level meeting is reportedly centered on the persistent efforts to secure the release of the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Dependable NG reports that the visit follows a significant legal development in which a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on November 20, 2025, following terrorism-related convictions. This verdict has sparked widespread protests and numerous calls for his freedom.
Governor Otti’s meeting with the President comes closely after the Abia State Governor personally visited Kanu at the Sokoto prison, where the IPOB leader is currently serving his life sentence. This engagement is believed to be a calculated part of a coordinated political and legal strategy involving various stakeholders to find a resolution to the protracted issue.
During his prison visit, Governor Otti was accompanied by Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN; and his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.
Following the visitation, Governor Otti publicly reaffirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to exhausting all legitimate avenues to secure Kanu’s release. He stated: “While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated, and will continue to work on, the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured.”
Tuesday’s crucial meeting with President Tinubu is widely interpreted as the next step in Governor Otti’s ongoing strategy, aimed at advancing dialogue and exploring potential solutions at the highest federal level. Details of the discussion had not yet emerged at the time of filing this report.
