A final, revised list of individuals granted clemency by President Bola Tinubu has emerged from the Presidency, bringing to a close the public scrutiny and review of the initial broader recommendations. The action involves a total of 34 persons, comprising those granted full pardon, individuals whose death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment, and others who received clemency. This scaled-down, ratified list followed a directive for a further review to ensure only eligible beneficiaries were cleared, particularly following public outcry over the inclusion of persons convicted for serious violent and drug-related crimes.
Dependable NG reports that the President executed the relevant instruments of release following consultations with the Council of State and after considering public opinion on the sensitive matter. This latest list focuses on individuals convicted of non-violent crimes, historical figures, and those who demonstrated sufficient remorse and good conduct. The total number of beneficiaries now stands at 34 across the three categories of mercy granted by the President.
The list of fifteen Nigerians granted Pardon includes: Mrs Anastasia Daniel Nwaobia, Barr. Hussaini Alhaji Umar, Ayinla Saadu Alanamu, and the highly publicised case of former lawmaker, Hon. Farouk M. Lawan. Additionally, the list includes posthumous pardons correcting historical injustices, notably for nationalist Herbert Macaulay, and Major General Mamman Jiya Vatsa. The list also grants posthumous pardons to the historical ‘Ogoni Nine,’ including Ken Saro Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuale, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine.
In the second category, four persons had their death sentences Commuted to Life Imprisonment. These include Emmanuel Baba, Abubakar Usman, Khalifa Umar, and Mohammed Umar, a measure taken due to factors like good conduct and the long duration of time spent on death row.
Finally, fifteen other individuals were granted Clemency. This list includes Oroka Michael Chibueze, Adesanya Olufemi Paul, Daniel Bodunwa, Hamza Abubakar, Buhari Sani, Mohammed Musa
