Football Legend Schmeichel Demands Maguire Be Restored as Man United Captain

Following Manchester United’s stunning 2-1 victory over rivals Liverpool at Anfield, club legend and former defender Peter Schmeichel has called for a significant change in the squad’s leadership, insisting that Harry Maguire should be reinstated as the team’s captain.
The Red Devils secured a shock win on Sunday, their first at Anfield since 2015, handing the struggling Reds their fourth consecutive defeat. The victory was clinched by a late header from Maguire, after Bryan Mbeumo’s early opener was cancelled out by Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.
Dependable NG reports that Schmeichel was deeply impressed by Maguire’s commanding performance and his all-around leadership on the pitch. Speaking to Viaplay at full-time, the Danish legend strongly urged Manager Ruben Amorim to strip Bruno Fernandes of the captain’s armband and give it back to the English defender.
“I can’t praise him enough. I want Harry Maguire to play every game. I want him to be the captain, he’s got all the attributes of a good Manchester United leader,” Schmeichel stated.
While acknowledging Maguire’s perceived weaknesses, such as his speed and trouble on the turn, Schmeichel argued that the qualities he offers far outweigh them.
“I think he should be the number one defender and he can organise everybody. He talks to everybody and gives them confidence, and I think that is important. Somebody who stands out all the time and takes responsibility, because I think that has been a problem in this team,” he explained.
Schmeichel offered a measured but critical assessment of the current skipper, Fernandes, who assumed the role after Maguire was stripped of it by former manager Erik ten Hag.
“I think Bruno is a fantastic player… but sometimes I don’t like his body language… sometimes he has reactions that can be mistaken for something else. Harry doesn’t have that, he has that calm head,” Schmeichel argued. He concluded by pointing out the deep-seated lack of confidence in the squad, emphasizing that players “need help,” a role he believes Maguire naturally fills.
