The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Police Force announced today that it has suspended the enforcement of the controversial vehicle tinted glass permit. The decision, which halts the exercise that has been a point of friction between police and motorists, is a direct result of a court order.

Dependable NG reports that the spokesperson for the FCT Command, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the suspension in an interview on AIT, explaining that the decision was effective immediately upon the police command’s official receipt of the court order. Adeh stated, “Information reaching me from the office of the PRO is that the order has been received and the enforcement of the tinted permit is now on hold pending the court’s verdict.” She emphasized the police’s adherence to the rule of law, clarifying that the directive to suspend enforcement will remain in place pending the outcome of the ongoing legal process, adding, “We are waiting for the verdict. We are not against the courts, and we will continue to wait until we get a verdict.”

Adeh also took the opportunity to defend the rationale behind the initial policy, noting that the tinted glass permit was introduced primarily for security reasons. She stressed that the policy was “purely security-driven,” as some criminal activities had been carried out using vehicles with darkened windows, which made it “difficult for law enforcement to identify suspects.” She clarified that the police are simply the enforcers of the law, not the originators of the policy, which was a response to escalating security challenges. The suspension now means that FCT motorists will not be stopped or penalized for driving with tinted glass until the court delivers a final judgment on the matter.
