Enugu Police Apprehend Robbery Suspect in NYSC Uniform for Evading Checkpoints
The Enugu State Police Command has successfully apprehended an armed robbery suspect who resorted to a peculiar disguise, dressing in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform, in an attempt to evade security checks following a raid.
The arrest was officially confirmed in a statement issued on Monday in Enugu by the Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe.
Dependable NG reports that the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Chinecherem Ugwuagu, was intercepted on October 11 along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway. Police officers attached to the Safer Highway Patrol team flagged down and arrested Ugwuagu while he was attempting to escape on a stolen Carter motorcycle.
During the arrest and search, operatives recovered several items, including an imitation firearm a gun-like object crafted from a lotion container—along with various clothes, a bank ATM card, and other personal effects.
Investigations conducted by the police revealed that earlier that morning, the suspect had forcibly entered a victim’s residence at 9th Mile in Udi Local Government Area. It is alleged that Ugwuagu used the imitation gun to threaten the victim and subsequently robbed him of the recovered items. The suspect then adopted the NYSC uniform as a disguise, believing it would help him slip past vigilant security personnel.
The police spokesman noted that the suspect had “dressed in the uniform to avoid detection but was arrested by eagle-eyed operatives.” The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has since commended the officers for their swift action and high level of professionalism in effecting the arrest.
CP Giwa reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to combating crime across the state, urging residents to continue their support by remaining law-abiding and providing credible information to the police. He assured the public, “We will continue to ensure the safety of lives and property across Enugu State,” adding that the suspect will be charged to court immediately upon the conclusion of the ongoing investigations.
