Donald Trump to China: Acknowledge US Role in World War II Victory

Donald Trump has called on the People’s Republic of China to officially acknowledge the United States’ assistance during World War II. In a post on Truth Social, the former president demanded that President Xi Jinping mention the “massive amount of support and blood” the U.S. provided to help China “secure its freedom from a very unfriendly foreign invader” during the 80th anniversary of its Victory Day.

Trump stated he looks forward to the remembrance of the American soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice through “bravery and sacrifice” for China’s ultimate victory. “May President Xi and the wonderful people of China have a great and lasting day of celebration,” he wrote.

The U.S. played a pivotal role in ending the war by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, leading to Japan’s surrender on September 2, 1945. In 2014, the Chinese government declared September 3 as Victory Day to commemorate the end of the conflict.

The main military parade on Wednesday in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square will feature various troop contingents and advanced military equipment, including drones, hypersonic missiles, and fighter jets. The event is the highlight of a high-level gathering that has brought numerous world leaders to Beijing, including North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

These leaders are in attendance following a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance founded by China in 2001. Current members of the SCO include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, with India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus having joined more recently.
