DJ Neptune Decries Sidelining of Nigerian Music Veterans

Popular disc jockey and music producer Imohiosen Patrick, professionally known as DJ Neptune, has voiced a significant concern regarding the operational dynamics of the Nigerian music industry, specifically lamenting the trend of systematically sidelining its veterans. He argues that this practice creates a challenging environment for established creatives.

DJ Neptune claims that once artists, producers, or DJs achieve certain foundational milestones within the Nigerian music space, they are quickly pushed aside, losing their central position to emerging talent.

He categorized this practice not as an isolated incident but as a “structural problem” embedded within the local industry ecosystem.

Drawing a clear comparison, DJ Neptune noted that in Western music industries, the approach is markedly different, allowing seasoned professionals to continue thriving alongside newcomers without being forcibly marginalized.

He described the Nigerian trend bluntly: “In Nigeria, once you reach a certain level they push you aside like, ‘Oya go to that corner, we’re done with you.’”

He concluded his critique of the industry’s approach by reiterating the core issue: “It’s a structural problem. Abroad, the OGs are still as relevant as the newbies. We need to address the structural issues,” he stressed in a recent interview with Hip TV.

When asked how he has successfully navigated this restrictive environment to maintain his own relevance over the years, DJ Neptune provided insight into his strategy for longevity.

He acknowledged that his career as a frontline DJ will not be a lifelong pursuit, stating, “Although I don’t plan to do this all my life -when it’s time to take a bow, I will.”

However, he attributed his sustained success to a conscious understanding of career evolution and adaptation.

“But what I have just done over the years is that I know when it’s time to re-invent,” he explained, emphasizing the necessity of change in a fast-paced industry.

DJ Neptune summarized his strategy with a universal truth: “That’s life. Things are changing so you need to move with the time.” This recognition of the need for constant re-invention appears to be the core element allowing him to transcend the structural problems he identified.
