Delta APC Defends Governor Oborevwori Over Peace Stance

In a powerful display of political solidarity, the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has risen to the defense of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, lambasting politicians for what it described as a desperate attempt to smear the governor’s image. The party, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, asserted that some political opponents were intentionally twisting the governor’s recent comments on peace and unity to create a false and misleading narrative. This staunch defense from the APC makes perfect sense in light of the significant political realignment that has occurred in the state, with Governor Oborevwori himself having officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC just a few months ago.

The governor’s comments, which sparked the controversy, were made during an address to a gathering of stakeholders. He had stressed his administration’s zero tolerance for any form of political or ethnic conflict. “You cannot fight under my watch. I will not allow it, not in my two tenures while I will be governor. Maybe after me, but while I am governor, peace will reign in Delta State,” the governor declared. The APC, now united under his leadership, argued that this statement was a straightforward commitment to lasting peace and inclusive governance, aimed at preventing a return to the political infighting that once plagued the state. The party accused opponents, including some within the APC who have yet to align with the new leadership, of trying to “weaponize” his remarks for selfish purposes, a clear reference to the ongoing power struggles within the party in the state.

The APC’s statement further clarified that Governor Oborevwori “belongs to all Deltans, irrespective of tribe, religion, or political leaning” and that his sole concern is to safeguard the peace necessary for development to thrive. This commitment is the bedrock of his administration’s ambitious M.O.R.E. Agenda, which serves as a comprehensive roadmap for governance. The agenda, which focuses on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security, is central to the governor’s vision for the state. According to Dependable NG, significant progress has already been made under this framework. For instance, in the area of Meaningful Development, the administration has embarked on a massive N230 billion infrastructure package, with major flyover projects in Warri and Effurun, as well as a new bridge in Agbor, all being executed by construction giant Julius Berger. These projects, once deemed impossible by critics, are a tangible demonstration of his commitment to the M.O.R.E. Agenda.

The APC also defended the administration’s record on peace and security. Onojeghuo noted that Delta State is currently enjoying greater safety and stability than in recent years, crediting the administration’s emphasis on fairness, equity, and justice. This aspect of the M.O.R.E. Agenda is a cornerstone of the governor’s strategy. His administration has consistently engaged with traditional rulers and grassroots leaders to prevent communal conflicts and has provided unwavering support to security agencies. The governor’s firm stance against acts of violence, such as the tragic killing of military personnel in Okuama, has earned him the trust and respect of federal authorities. By prioritizing dialogue and collaboration, his government is successfully addressing the root causes of insecurity, thereby creating a conducive environment for both local and foreign investors. Propaganda, the party stressed, cannot erase these verifiable achievements.

The APC’s resolute defense of Governor Oborevwori highlights the new political dynamic in Delta State. Following his defection, which was described by President Bola Tinubu as a “political tsunami,” the APC has consolidated power and is now working to present a united front ahead of the next election cycle. By publicly standing with the governor, the party is signalling its full confidence in his leadership and his M.O.R.E. Agenda. They are framing the attacks as a sign of fear from those intimidated by his achievements and his ability to unite a previously fractured political landscape. The party’s assurance that the governor remains committed to leaving behind a legacy of peace, security, and sustainable development serves as a message to both the public and his political rivals: his administration will not be distracted by what they see as baseless accusations from a desperate opposition.
