APC Labels Peter Obi’s Criticism ‘Hypocritical,’ Defends Tinubu’s Borrowing Strategy

The APC in Lagos State has fired back at Peter Obi, defending President Tinubu’s administration and its approach to borrowing as a strategic necessity rather than an act of fiscal recklessness. In a sharp-worded statement, the party accused the former Labour Party presidential candidate of “hypocrisy” for his recent comments on the nation’s debtThe Lagos APC spokesman, Mr. Seye Oladejo, argued that the Tinubu administration’s borrowings are not only “strategic” but are also tied directly to funding key developmental projects in critical sectors like infrastructure, energy, and transportation. He asserted that this is a globally accepted practice, noting that even the most advanced economies borrow to stimulate growth.Oladejo then turned his focus on Peter Obi, stating that he lacks the “moral authority” to lecture anyone on fiscal prudence. He recalled Obi’s time as governor, alleging that he left behind a legacy of “unpaid pensions, collapsing infrastructure, and poor human capital indices.”
The APC spokesperson also pointed to what he called a “glaring contradiction” in Obi’s public persona, citing his use of private jets for campaign travel while simultaneously giving sermons on cost-cutting. Oladejo contrasted this with what he described as President Tinubu’s bold and necessary steps—such as subsidy removal and currencyreforms—which he said were difficult but vital measures to secure Nigeria’s future, calling them “leadership in action.”
