Ambush in Bama LGA: Commanding Officer and Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram Attack

The Nigerian Army has confirmed a significant loss in its counter-insurgency operations after a deadly ambush by Boko Haram militants in Borno State claimed the life of the Commanding Officer of the 202 Tank Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Saidu Paiko, along with other gallant soldiers.

The confrontation, which resulted in the heavy casualties for the military, took place on October 17, 2025, within the Kashimri area of the Bama Local Government Area. The confirmation came through an official statement released on Monday by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Major Appolonia Anele.

However, Major Anele clarified that while the military prevented a large-scale attack, the victory was costly, as the Commanding Officer and several personnel paid the supreme price while defending their position.

Further details provided by Major Anele indicate that the troops fought fiercely, during which they managed to neutralise several Boko Haram fighters and successfully destroy key terrorist hideouts in the region. She praised the soldiers’ quick response and tenacity, noting that their action was instrumental in frustrating the insurgents’ plot to destabilise peace and cripple socio-economic activities in Bama and surrounding communities. The military’s operational dominance during the fierce engagement ensured that some of the retreating terrorists suffered significant gunshot wounds.

The Army spokesperson hailed the fallen servicemen as courageous heroes whose lives were sacrificed for the sovereignty and stability of the Nigerian nation. She affirmed the Army’s commitment to honouring their memory while intensifying efforts to eradicate terrorism.

In a message of condolence, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed his profound sorrow to the bereaved families. He described the deceased as “fathers, brothers, and sons” who exhibited exceptional bravery. Oluyede restated the military’s unwavering resolve to press the offensive against all terror groups until lasting peace is fully restored in the North-East and across the country.

Finally, the Army issued a cautionary appeal to the public and media, urging them to refrain from sharing images of the fallen soldiers until their next of kin have been formally notified.
