Abia Unveils Electric Mobility Plan

The Abia State Government is set to revolutionize its public transportation system with the introduction of electric buses, a move aimed at simultaneously tackling severe urban air pollution and significantly reducing commuting costs for its citizens. This major policy shift is designed to deliver zero smoke emissions across the state’s commercial hubs.

The Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, delivered this update during his address at the Abia–Türkiye Investment Summit and Product Exhibition in Umuahia. He stressed that the new electric fleet is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade aimed at restoring order and efficiency to urban life.

Beyond the buses, the government is introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven traffic lights to manage congestion and is constructing modern, integrated bus terminals in Umuahia and Aba. These projects are intended to streamline operations and provide more effective services to residents.

Ukaegbu confirmed that the state has already taken delivery of the first batch of twenty electric buses, with an additional twenty expected to arrive within a few days, accelerating the rollout of the environmentally friendly fleet. The necessary bus terminals and solar-powered charging infrastructure are already being finalized to support continuous operation.

The Transport Ministry is also prioritizing inclusivity in its mobility plan. Ukaegbu highlighted that some of the newly acquired electric buses have been specifically designed with accessibility features to ensure convenience and seamless travel for persons with disabilities.

Furthermore, the new bus terminals across the state will be equipped with integrated ticketing systems, various retail outlets, and upgraded security networks. These additions are designed to ensure maximum convenience, safety, and a world-class passenger experience for all commuters utilizing the new public transport system.
