Heavy security presence was deployed at the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja as former Vice Chairman for PDP North Central, Abdulrahman Mohammed, officially assumed his role as the party’s acting national chairman.

Dependable NG reports that Mohammed’s resumption of duty comes amidst a deepening crisis and multiple internal suspensions rocking the party’s National Working Committee (NWC). Prior to arriving at the national secretariat, Mohammed addressed his supporters at the FCT office of the PDP, confirming his intention to take over as the acting national chairman.

Mohammed was declared the acting national chairman by a faction of the NWC, led by suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, following the faction’s announcement of the suspension of the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, alongside other officials. This move by the Anyanwu-led group was based on allegations including incompetence, financial misconduct, and disregard for court judgments, with the affected officials referred to the disciplinary committee.

The assumption of office by Mohammed further heightens the confusion and disarray within the opposition party, especially as the Damagun-led faction of the NWC had earlier announced the suspension of Anyanwu and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, over allegations of insubordination and disloyalty. These internal disputes reached a critical point just days prior, when the Federal High Court in Abuja restrained the PDP from proceeding with its planned National Convention, citing failure to comply with statutory requirements of its constitution.
