LP’s Abure Hails Internal Democracy as New Leaders Emerge in State Congresses
The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has publicly applauded the successful outcome of the party’s congresses held across 35 states of the federation, which saw the emergence of new state executives and leaders.
Dependable NG reports that Abure commended the process, stating that genuine internal democracy was demonstrated as party members were given the free hand to choose their leaders without any form of external interference.
In a statement released by the LP spokesman, Obiora Ifoh, Abure noted that from the commencement of the ward congress on Tuesday through to Saturday, the party’s National monitoring team had not received a single negative report.
The statement highlighted that the exercise, which was also monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, was widely applauded as one of the most transparent congresses ever conducted in Nigeria.
“We are happy that the party leaders across the state complied with all the laid down rules by ensuring that only the choice of the party members emerged across all levels of our leadership. This Congress was actually used to test run the reforms this leadership introduced and we are happy that it worked,” Abure said.
He reiterated his commitment to party supremacy: “Under my leadership, we have insisted that no individual will be bigger than the party and everyone who has subscribed to be a member of the party must subsume to the party’s authority.”
Abure disclosed that Abia State was suspended from participating in the congresses because some persons working for the state government chose to obstruct the democratic process by procuring a court injunction. He affirmed the party’s adherence to the court order while confirming that the legal team has been delegated to vacate the order promptly to enable the party to hold its congress in Abia.
Concluding his statement, Abure asserted the party’s readiness for the next election cycle: “There is no gain saying that Labour Party is ready for 2027 general election as we have constructively put our challenges behind us.” He called on all members to support the newly elected executives to ensure the party surpasses its achievements from the last general election.
