Sabinus: My Father Regretted Funding My Education After I Became a Skit Maker
Popular Nigerian comedian Emmanuel Ejekwu, widely known by his stage name Sabinus, has disclosed the initial strong opposition he faced from his father regarding his career choice, revealing that his dad actually regretted funding his university education once he discovered his son had become a skit maker.
Dependable NG reports that Sabinus shared this personal story in a candid interview with VJ Adams. The comedian explained that his father had high professional hopes for him, specifically desiring him to become a lawyer. After failing to secure admission into the law program, Sabinus eventually opted to study Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
He recalled that it was during his time on campus that he first identified and developed his talent for comedy, which led him to begin creating skits.
The comedian detailed his father’s immediate, furious reaction upon discovering the truth about his career path. Sabinus kept his skit-making career a secret until a year after graduation. When his father finally found out he was a comedian, he described the profession in harsh terms.
Sabinus quoted his father’s reaction: “At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport.”
“After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters. My sisters confirmed to him that I was into comedy. He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer.’”
The comedian concluded by noting the turning point: his father’s opposition softened considerably, and he eventually gave him his full blessing after Sabinus began consistently gifting him substantial sums of money earned from his comedy proceeds.
