Adamawa Police Arrest Officers for Shooting Civilian Car
The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two police officers following an incident where they discharged their firearms at a civilian vehicle during a routine checkpoint stop. The action has been widely condemned as unprofessional and unnecessary.
The incident was confirmed in a statement released by the command’s spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, who explained that the Adamawa State Police Command had received a formal report of unprofessional conduct.
The officers in question were deployed to a nipping point—a temporary checkpoint—attached to the Jimeta Divisional Police Headquarters and were on duty along the River Side area of Jimeta.
Preliminary findings by the Command revealed the sequence of events that led to the shooting. The officers initially stopped a Mercedes 180 car to conduct a routine inspection and search.
Nguroje stated that the situation escalated quickly when the officers alleged that the occupants of the civilian vehicle resisted the routine search.
During the tense encounter, one of the police personnel acted in a manner deemed “prejudicial to discipline,” firing gunshots directly at the vehicle’s tires.
The spokesman explicitly condemned the use of force, describing the act of shooting at the car as both unnecessary and deeply unprofessional conduct for an officer on duty. Fortunately, the incident did not result in any injuries to the occupants of the car.
Nguroje disclosed that immediate action was taken against the erring officers, confirming that both individuals involved have been arrested and taken into custody to face disciplinary proceedings.
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Dankombo Morris, swiftly ordered a thorough and transparent investigation into the “sad incident” to establish all facts and determine the appropriate punitive measures.
The command has assured the public that once the investigation is complete, appropriate and decisive disciplinary measures will be taken against the arrested personnel.
The spokesperson concluded the statement by reaffirming the Adamawa State Police Command’s core commitment to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and discipline within its ranks. He stressed the command’s dedication to upholding respect for the rights of all citizens, aiming to rebuild trust in the wake of the reckless actions.
