Mother Orders Fatal Stabbing of Son in Calabar Market
A shocking family tragedy unfolded over the weekend at the bustling Marian Market in Calabar Municipality, Cross River State, where a young man was allegedly stabbed to death by his elder sister. Eyewitness accounts suggest the fatal attack was tragically instigated by the victim’s own mother during a heated argument.
The deceased was reportedly the son of a woman known for selling fish in bulk at the market, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting.
According to testimonies from women traders in the market, the disturbing altercation began shortly after the deceased arrived at his mother’s stall. The victim was described by witnesses as appearing “dazed.”
A trader who spoke anonymously claimed the suspect, the deceased’s sister, is approximately 23 years old. The witness indicated that the victim was known to be an addict, often using a dangerous combination of narcotics popularly referred to as ‘Ice’ in Calabar.
“When he got to his mother’s stall to help as usual, an argument broke out. He exchanged words with his mother,” the witness explained, setting the scene for the ensuing violence.
Some market traders alleged that the mother had previously voiced fears about her son’s erratic and violent behavior whenever he was under the influence of drugs. They claimed he had attempted to assault and even rape her on several occasions.
The situation took a horrific turn when the elder sister arrived at the stall. “When the elder sister arrived, the mother reportedly told her to stab him,” one trader stated, detailing the chilling instruction.
The witness speculated on the mother’s intentions, adding, “Maybe she didn’t expect it would lead to his death.” Immediately after the stabbing, the boy began to bleed heavily and quickly grew weak.
As the victim’s condition rapidly deteriorated, realizing the severity of the injury, the mother and daughter allegedly attempted to flee the chaotic scene. However, quick-thinking neighboring traders intervened.
While the daughter, who carried out the stabbing, managed to escape the market, the mother was successfully restrained by the vigilant traders.
Another trader explained their reasoning for intervention, stating, “We were afraid that if they escaped, the police might come after us instead,” demonstrating a communal fear of legal implication.
The restrained mother later confessed to fellow traders that her directive to attack her son was born out of intense fear for her personal safety, reiterating claims that the son had frequently threatened or assaulted her while high on drugs.
A trader identified as Mr. Greg confirmed that the group immediately alerted the police command. Officers arrived promptly at the market and took the mother into custody.
Mr. Greg described the disturbing scene during the arrest: “She was made to carry her son’s body on her lap. It was soaked in his blood,” highlighting the tragic and bloody end to the family dispute.
Attempts to obtain an official statement from the Cross River State Command’s Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Igri Ewa, regarding the incident and the ongoing manhunt for the daughter were unsuccessful.
