Wike Faction Summons Emergency Meeting, Challenging PDP Expulsion
A significant political showdown is rapidly escalating within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the recently expelled faction led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, is moving to challenge the authority of the party’s new leadership. This defiance is taking the form of an emergency meeting summoned at the party’s National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Abuja, setting the stage for a dramatic face-off.
The escalation comes barely 48 hours after the main body of the PDP announced the expulsion of Minister Wike, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and other prominent members loyal to the former Rivers State Governor. This mass expulsion was formalized during the party’s just-concluded National Elective Convention held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, citing severe anti-party activities.
However, the expelled faction has swiftly rejected the legitimacy of the convention and the subsequent expulsions. A notice circulated on Monday by the factional National Secretary of the party, Samuel Anyanwu—himself among those expelled—called for an emergency meeting, directly challenging the authority of the new PDP National Chairman, Dr. Kabiru Turaki.
The notice, which has been widely reported, urged all members of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) to attend the scheduled meeting on Tuesday. The communication emphasized the gravity of the summons, stating clearly that “attendance is very important as crucial matters will be discussed and addressed.”
This move to convene a meeting at the official party headquarters by figures who have been formally expelled is a direct and forceful challenge to the recognized leadership of the PDP. The action signals that the Wike-led faction views their expulsion as invalid and intends to assert their continued authority over the party’s structure.
The PDP’s constitutional crisis has deepened significantly since the convention, with the Wike faction demonstrating a clear intent to pursue its agenda irrespective of the decisions made in Ibadan. Political observers suggest the meeting could be used to mobilize legal challenges against the convention’s outcome, make formal declarations of a parallel leadership structure, or issue counter-expulsions, thereby cementing the existence of two distinct and warring camps within the opposition party. The unfolding drama at Wadata Plaza promises to determine the near-future stability and legal standing of the PDP.
