The Bauchi State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested two individuals suspected of significant economic sabotage following an operation focused on protecting critical national infrastructure. The suspects were apprehended for allegedly stealing a massive quantity of diesel used to power a major MTN mast located in the Sabon Kasuwa–Railway area of Bauchi Local Government Area.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Command’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf. He identified the suspects as Abdulrahman Jibrin, 20, and Munarak Halilu, 31, both now in the custody of the NSCDC as the investigation proceeds. The operation highlights the sustained efforts of security agencies to combat the persistent problem of infrastructure vandalism, which often results in network disruptions and huge financial losses for telecommunications companies.

Yusuf revealed that preliminary investigations conducted by the NSCDC have yielded a crucial confession from the arrested individuals. The suspects allegedly admitted to repeatedly stealing diesel from the telecommunications site over an extended period—specifically, for the past year. Their latest theft involved approximately 600 litres of diesel, a large volume of fuel essential for keeping the critical communication mast operational. The spokesperson confirmed that once comprehensive investigations are concluded, the two suspects will be formally charged to court for prosecution under relevant laws protecting public infrastructure.

The State Commandant, Oloyede Nelson Oyerinde, commended the vigilance and prompt action of the operatives involved in the arrest. He used the incident to reaffirm the Corps’ unwavering commitment to safeguarding all critical national infrastructure and assets within the state. Furthermore, Commandant Oyerinde issued a stern warning to criminal elements, urging them to immediately desist from all acts of vandalism and economic sabotage. He stressed that anyone caught engaging in such illegal activities will be made to face the full weight of the law, signaling a zero-tolerance approach to crimes that jeopardize essential public services like communication networks. The NSCDC continues to rely on community intelligence and heightened surveillance to protect Nigeria’s extensive network of infrastructure against thieves and vandals.
