LP Candidate Moghalu and Peter Obi Suffer Defeat in Own Polling Units in Anambra Governorship Race

The Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the Anambra State election, George Moghalu, suffered a significant and symbolic defeat, not only in his own polling unit but also in the polling unit of LP’s 2023 presidential candidate and former state governor, Peter Obi. These early results highlight the intensely competitive nature of the Anambra election and suggest a major challenge to the Labour Party’s dominance in the state.

Dependable NG reports that the incumbent Governor, Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), secured a victory over Moghalu in the LP candidate’s own polling unit, underscoring the formidable strength of the sitting governor’s party even in the stronghold of his main challenger. In that specific unit, APGA garnered a total of 57 votes, while George Moghalu of the Labour Party only managed to score 22 votes. The All Progressives Congress (APC) trailed with just 5 votes, showing that the contest was principally between the incumbent APGA and the LP.

Adding significantly to the Labour Party’s disappointment, the All Progressives Congress (APC) also emerged victorious at the polling station of former Anambra Governor and current Labour Party stalwart, Peter Obi, who remains one of the state’s most influential political figures. The results from Obi’s unit demonstrated a major upset, where Nicholas Ukachukwu of the APC polled 73 votes, comfortably defeating Moghalu of the Labour Party, who secured 57 votes. APGA came in a respectable third place at that unit with 38 votes, indicating a complex multi-party dynamic at play.

The results from these key, high-profile polling units are typically viewed as indicative of the voting trends and the strength of political influence of party leaders. The loss of both the candidate’s and the party stalwart’s units highlights the strong grassroots mobilization efforts by both the APC and the incumbent APGA, effectively countering the national popularity wave often associated with the Labour Party since the last general election. The results strongly suggest that the race is a tough battle for the LP against the established political structures in Anambra.
