Former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi has stated that while he is a member of the Labour Party (LP) and supports its candidate in the forthcoming governorship election, his foremost concern is ensuring a free, fair, and credible poll on November 8.

Dependable NG reports that Obi, who was the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, made the remarks while addressing journalists on Wednesday in Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of the state. He emphasized that all the governorship candidates were his friends and called on them to prioritize the state’s interest over their personal ambitions as the election approaches.

“For this election, my party is Labour Party. I want a free and fair election. All the contestants are my friends,” Obi stated. He confirmed his support for the Labour Party candidate, but drew a firm line against electoral malpractice. “As a member of Labour Party, I am supporting our candidate, but not to the extent of vote buying because I can never buy votes,” he asserted.

Obi reiterated that he would not engage in any untoward actions for the election and insisted that the process must be totally free and fair. “I’m not on the ballot, and I believe that all those contesting are related to me one way or the other. Let Anambra people decide who will be their governor. People should not indulge in vote buying. I’m not against any of them,” he said. He added that he left office as governor 12 years ago, insisting that he has no personal interest in the outcome and that the people of Anambra must be allowed to freely choose their next leader.
