The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced legal action against Muhammad Umar at the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri, following allegations that he defrauded Abubakar Kaumi of N4.2 million in a fraudulent real estate transaction.

Dependable NG reports that the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the EFCC arraigned Umar on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, before Justice Aisha Ibrahim on a two-count charge bordering on fraudulent transaction and misappropriation. The EFCC asserted that Umar collected the sum of N4,200,000 from Kaumi under the false pretense that the money was for the purchase of a plot of land situated in Bolori Ward, Maiduguri—a claim that the commission asserts Umar knew to be false at the time of the transaction.

When the charges were read in court, Muhammad Umar pleaded not guilty to both counts.

Following the defendant’s plea, the EFCC prosecuting counsel, S.O. Saka, moved an application urging the court to set a date for the commencement of trial proceedings and to remand the defendant in a correctional centre until the trial could begin. Justice Ibrahim granted the application, ordering Umar to be remanded in a Correctional Facility and subsequently adjourned the case to November 3, 2025, for the commencement of the substantive hearing.
