WAEC Debunks Claims of Restricting Subject Choices for 2026 WASSCE
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has categorically denied recent reports alleging that it issued a directive instructing senior secondary students to take only certain subjects for the upcoming 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school-based candidates.
The Acting Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, Moyosola Adeshina, issued a statement on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, to debunk the rumors, stating:
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject.”
Clarification on Curriculum Authority
WAEC emphasized that its role is strictly to implement government policies through assessments, and it does not have the authority to develop or regulate curricula in Nigeria.
Curriculum Responsibility: The responsibility for developing and regulating curricula in Nigeria rests solely with the Federal Government.
WAEC’s Role: WAEC’s role is limited to implementing government policies through examinations and operating strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country.
Modification of Curriculum: Adeshina clarified that “The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government.”
The Council reassured all stakeholders of its commitment to professionalism and excellence, guaranteeing that all candidates for the 2026 WASSCE will be given a fair and equal opportunity in the assessment process.
Schools and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and to rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines.
